We heard a local radio ad last week calling Saturday’s concert at the PAC the “first annual Charleston Jazz Festival.” That’s a tall description for a one-night gig, especially with the annual jazz-oriented events that already exist in the area — from the Jazz Artists of Charleston’s special events to the concerts and club shows of the Spoleto Festival USA and Piccolo Spoleto. Moniker aside, fans of the contemporary smooth-jazz style — a funky but low-key fusion of instrumental electric and acoustic jazz, soul, modern R&B, and adult contemporary pop — should be excited to see alto sax star Boney James in the headlining slot. One of the best-selling instrumental artists in recent years, James furthers his long-standing reputation as a major force with his recently-released concept album, Send One Your Love. Jazz/R&B pianist Alex Bugnon and jazz/neo-soul electric guitarist Matt Marshak (both New York-based) share the bill. 7 p.m.
