Swinging on strings. The Beaufort-based combo Blue Mudd plays jazzy blues and swing, from vintage Louis Armstrong to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. They handle a bit of Brazilian folk and classic singer/songwriter fare as well, but it's mostly genuine Americana.

Playing, singing, and teaching. Guitarist and singer Vic Varner, a veteran musician and educator with a smooth technique and rich baritone, oversees the proceedings at Blue Mudd shows. Varner has been a music and vocal teacher for 30 years, most recently at the University of South Carolina in Beaufort. Backing him at Piccolo Spoleto are mandolinist/fiddler Beekman Webb, who hosts an acoustic jam every Tuesday night at the Foolish Frog in Frogmore; fiddler Jevon Daly of Hilton Head-based band Lowcountry Boil; and upright bassist Adam Granade, a skillful transplant from Vermont.

The secret weapon. Blue Mudd will welcome a locally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist to the stage at Gennaro's: veteran string player Roger Bellow. He usually performs an array of early-20th-century standards and obscure ditties with old-time, folk, and ukulele ensembles around town, and he knows his stuff very well. As a special guest, Bellow will play solos on an old resonator guitar. We expect his fiery solos to provide some of the hottest moments of the set.
