Egan & Sons

Staff Pick

We're never happy to see places go, and the closing of Moe's Downtown was a real bummer. But with every ending comes some other beginning, or whatever that phrase is. And this new beginning was Egan & Sons, a New Jersey-based eatery that specializes in Irish pub food with a hint of Italian-American. But if we're honest, it's not the food that caught our attention — although it's tasty. It's what they did with Moe's former space. The dark, sports bar vibe is gone, replaced with white booths and a granite bar. Some of the decor may be a bit kitschy (ahem, haloed topiaries, weird antiques, and uninspired paintings), but the bars are things of beauty. Oh that's right, there are now two bars. The granite one that greets you as you walk in and the wooden one where Moe's Downtown's bartenders used to sling their ales. One is for when you want to feel classy and sip wine on a cool slab of rock, and the other is for when you want a pint with no frills. And with the East Bay area's lack of watering holes, we're pretty amped for this transformation.
