Best Surprise Guest

Jason Isbell

Staff Pick

Sadler Vaden, former Charlestonian and now-guitarist for Jason Isbell, returned to the Holy City last summer to get married. Naturally, his Shrimp Records pals organized a hootenanny at the Pour House, and the proceedings included Vaden, a very-pregnant Cary Ann Hearst, Michael Trent, Jack Burg, Josh Kaler, Michael Flynn, and Joel Hamilton performing both covers and originals. During a family jam of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World,” none other than Jason Isbell, in town for his guitarist’s wedding, surprised the PoHo crowd by joining in, as did Kevn Kinney from Drivin’ n Cryin’. Before long, Isbell’s wife, musician, and violinist Amanda Shires, also preggars, was onstage too, and the whole thing still seems like a wonderful dream. —Kelly Rae Smith
