While we don’t hang 10 as much as we’d like to (surfing’s hard, brah), we’re more likely to hit the waves after stopping by McKevlin’s. The longest established surf shop in South Carolina, and one of the oldest on the East Coast, McKevlin’s has a long history of being cool, man. Dennis McKevlin and his oldest son Ted opened the shop in 1965 in a nine-by-30-foot storage room at the Folly Bowling Center. Talk about humble beginnings. Today the shop thrives in a much larger location on Folly Beach, where they offer a vast inventory of new products. The store sells everything from sunglasses to swimsuits, but we recommend checking out their hour-long surf lessons. What gnarlier way to celebrate 50 years of McKevlin’s?
