Best Sign That the City Center Has Moved Away from the Market and East Bay

Cruise Ship Apathy

Staff Pick

Maybe it’s just us, but every time we hear about the whole cruise ship fight, we kinda greet it with a dull, “meh.” While there’s no doubt that a towering cruise ship sullies the skyline for some South of Broaders — and Mayor Joe and his cronies have been derelict in actually getting a formal contractual agreement with Carnival — the truth is the City of Charleston has already ceded the area to the tourists, whether it’s Ed and Edna Fannypacker from Findlay, Ohio, strolling through the Market or Bob and Bella Dibase from Trenton, New Jersey, disembarking from the Carnival Fantasy. There are still plenty of bars and restaurants we like to frequent along East Bay and Market, but like most Charlestonians, we tend to stick to Upper King and the growing NoMo area. The truth is, the old city center is more of an amusement park these days than a living, breathing ’hood. But unlike Disney World, fast passes don’t work here.
