Smoky bars are for some folks. Symphony halls are for others. But if there’s a concert setting that can attract nearly universal affinity, it’s gathering around a pond in the early evening to hear a trio of bands and songwriters. That’s three diverse acts each week, including many national touring bands, 52 weeks a year. And did we mention it’s free? Eddie White and the good folks at Awendaw Green have turned a weekly Wednesday night jam session into a music destination, putting the way-east-of-the-Cooper set right in the middle of Charleston’s live music happenings. Bands now call months in advance to reserve a slot at the Barn Jam, where the money and thanks all come in the form of donations, volunteers, and the kind words of genuine music lovers. Dinner is served every Wednesday at 6 p.m. beside the Sewee Outpost. If you’re still bad-talking Charleston’s music scene, you haven’t been to a Barn Jam.
