After the loss of 52.5 Records a few years ago, Earshot Records is a much-needed addition to Charleston’s music scene. The smallish shop on Savannah Highway (part of a smallish S.C.-based chain) gives local audiophiles another place to celebrate Record Store Day or to find used copies of Archers of Loaf LPs. This is where to go if you want to spend an hour searching through specialized sections for rarities and out-of-the-box finds — think more esoteric punk, jazz, and experimental music. They also sell some quirky books, like a heavy metal cookbook and a tome on the apocalypse. From now on, if anyone tries to tell you you’d be crazy to open up a new independent record store, cite Earshot as an example.
