Sensible voices can sometimes be hard to come by on the Charleston County School District Board of Trustees, which is why a lot of school board observers breathed a sigh of relief when Kate Darby won one of the two open East Cooper seats on the board last year. Darby got her political start as chair of the Wando High School Improvement Council — no small task at what has become the largest high school in the state. In her candidate interview with the City Paper, Darby described herself as a fiscal conservative and laid out her idea of the school board’s responsibilities: “The board is supposed to set the vision and hold the superintendent accountable, but not to micromanage the day-to-day operations of the school district.” Darby hasn’t made very many waves on the board yet, but we’re interested to see how she follows up on her campaign rhetoric about getting the district’s long-term building and renovation plans in financial order.
