I don’t often look at scary medical photos, nor do I often look at 19th century pictures of injuries and naked men. But when I do, I make sure it’s at a legit “art” exhibit like the Photography of the Civil War show at the Gibbes Museum of Art last year. Seriously, this exhibit was fantastic. Not only did it have rare photos of all the Civil War bigwigs, but there was a whole room dedicated to medical photography. As in, musket-wounds and amputated legs, torn open abdomens and rigid cadavers. It was impressive and horrifying, but so incredibly interesting I could have spent all day. Too bad my weak stomach could handle only about an hour.
