Best Relentless Campaigner

Paul Thurmond

Staff Pick

After leaving Charleston County Council in 2010, Paul Thurmond seemed to turn up on every ballot in the Charleston metro area until he finally landed a spot in the state Senate last year. An unsuccessful bid for the 1st Congressional District in 2010 led to a part-time gig as a hand shaker and North Charleston city prosecutor, while the run-up to the 2012 election led to speculation about what down-ballot race Thurmond would jump into. After being forced into a runoff to win the October special election to succeed Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell in the Senate (until November), even Thurmond couldn’t go untouched by 2012’s unfortunate ballot-apocalypse, and it looked as though he would once again find himself as a man without a district. After a few appeals, a primary, and a general election, South Carolina can once again say it has its very own Sen. Thurmond.
