2801 Myrtle St. Edisto Island.
It ain't pretty — few re-appropriated gas station bars three blocks off the front beach are — but in a place like Edisto, such laid-back settings seem to propagate like beer cans in a country ditch. Whaley's has been around in one guise or another for as long as anyone can remember, anchoring the far end of Edisto Beach as a variety store, gas pump, and community gathering spot. More recently, the place ditched the gas, installed a real bar, and cranked up some fry-o-lators and steam pots in the back. These days you come to Whaley's for cold beer, live music, good times, boiled shrimp, and some pretty good bar grub. Stay long enough and you might never leave — that's how everyone else ends up on Edisto anyway. —Jeff Allen
