"Hoover Country"

Staff Pick

A brand-new Dodge on a Lowcountry road is a pretty sight to see. So begins “Hoover Country,” a sweet, steel guitar-soaked jingle about the joys of running South Carolina blacktops in a Ram, Wrangler or Sebring. The song intimates that you should purchase your machine at one of several Hoover dealerships in the Lowcountry, which makes sense given that Keith Roberts, general manager of Hoover Dodge Chrysler Jeep of Summerville, penned the tune with writing partner Mike Davis back in 1994. “I told (Davis) what I wanted, and we put it together,” Roberts says. “I liked the idea of something like that instead of a hard-selling ad.” The song has been tweaked a couple times through the years. For instance, it originally advertised only Dodges, but it now includes the entire Hoover organization. Sadly “Hoover Country” might be exiting the airwaves again for a tune up — or permanently — in the coming days. Chrysler isn’t offering a lifetime Powertrain warranty on its 2010 models, rendering a portion of the lyrics false. If the song is over, we’ll just watch our Hemi-powered drones scream down the boulevard in silence.
