Bishop England High School

Readers Pick

Charleston’s historic Roman Catholic school turns 100 years old this year, and it continues to live up to its reputation for academic excellence. Students’ scores on the SAT and ACT standardized tests exceed state and national averages, and the school can boast that 96 percent of its students go on to attend four-year colleges or universities. BE is a relatively small school, with just over 700 students, and yet it offers advanced placement courses that are often hard to find in a school of its size, including environmental science, French, Spanish, and calculus. One other important distinction about the BE academic program is that all students must complete four units of theology, part of the school’s mission to “foster a faith community characterized by the Gospel message of mutual respect and charity.” Tuition can be a little steep for some families — set as high as $12,350 per year for some students —but need-based assistance is available for some students.
