A few doors down from the Carolina Ice Palace, the Saigon Supermarket has a wealth of tasty treats you won’t find in your average Lowcountry grocery store — from bottles of kim chee paste to Aloha brand barbecue sauce, a Hawaiian favorite. They’ve also got a pretty sizable fish selection in the back of the store, a heckuva lot of Asian fruit up front, and, if you’re lucky, they just might have the Filipino treat known as balut sitting in egg cartons on the front counter. What’s balut, you ask? Well, it’s a duck egg with a pretty well-formed baby duck inside. Mmm. Feathered-bottoms up.
