With so many historical sites and natural beauty spots in our area, there are some places that just don't get the attention they deserve. The Charleston Tea Plantation is one such hidden treasure. Tucked away on Wadmalaw Island, it's America's only operating tea plantation. According to business manager Cara Valentine, any other kind of tea you buy is imported. Partnered with Bigelow Tea, the plantation does everything on the grounds from growing to harvesting, processing and packaging loose leaf tea. Only pyramid bags have to be sent away to be packaged. The site is green and picturesque even in the off-season, and entry to the grounds and factory tours are free (trolley rides are $10). A relaxing place to visit, saunter 'round, and get your home-grown brew on.
