While Monster Music & Movies cleaned up big-time in the readers’ picks this year, 52.5 Records continues to enjoy local support as well. One of the last record stores left on the peninsula, 52.5 has remained defiantly cool and indie for over 12 years. Proprietor Clay Scales and his staff stock classic and brand-new recordings, books, DVDs, posters, magazines, and unique artwork (in the newly established 16 Penny Gallery). Their fare has little in common with the commercial mainstream. They distribute and sell local music. They regularly host live musical and visual arts events. They offer audio samples of new releases on their website. And they even sell microbrewed and imported beer from a well-stocked cooler by the front window.
