Road-widening and condo-fication may be the double-edged sword that most threatens the character of the Lowcountry. In 2007, three notable music venues closed their doors (none of the club owners owned the properties). It's still undetermined what will become of Cumberland's and Bert's Bar (on Sullivan's Island), but the fate of Folly Road's Barrier Island Surf Shop has been written. In one fell swoop on a Friday in December, bulldozers demolished the ramshackle venue, outdoor deck, and bar, clearing way for 150-or-so townhomes that'll soon occupy the space across the street from Piggly Wiggly. They'll go well with their neighbor a mile up the road by Bowen's Island, The Preserve at the Clam Farm, yet another large-scale condominium project creeping toward Folly Beach.
