Through good and bad, the church known as Mother Emanuel has persevered. Flung into the national spotlight in 2015, Emanuel AME became a symbol of strength in tragedy and the focus of heightened attention and scrutiny following June’s tragic shooting. But after the national news crews packed up and left town, Mother Emanuel went right back to what it had always been — a place to celebrate one’s faith. Now under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Betty Deas Clark, the South’s oldest AME church now enters into a new era. So, while many visitors may still stop by to snap a quick photo in front of the church, don’t forget that there’s plenty more past the doors of Mother Emanuel.
