We pity the poor folks who don't read the Charleston Mercury. Really we do. It's one of the most entertaining publications in the Lowcountry. This largely personality-driven paper is low on actual reportage and high on opinion and commentary on everything from Middle East affairs to whiskey. While most of the Mercury has a decidedly right-wing bent, one columnist is a tried-and-true bow-tie-wearing lefty: Butler Derrick. This former U.S. Congressman routinely pens thoughtful and insightful columns in every issue. We don't always agree with him — sometimes he's just not liberal enough for us — but we sure are glad that he takes the time to dish out a little wit and wisdom.
