Best Performance by an Artist Who Really, Really Had to Pee

Todd Barry, Charleston Comedy Festival

Staff Pick

As the poster boy for the Charleston Comedy Festival 2011, Todd Barry caused a few near panic attacks when his flight barely made it to town in time for a sold-out show. We started getting nervous when flights from New York were canceled due to inclement weather, but we never thought anyone would be cutting it so close. After a few delays, the droll comedian landed in Charleston at 8:10 p.m., 10 minutes after his show at the Footlight Players Theatre was slated to start. The quick-thinking Theatre 99 folks distracted the crowd with a stand-up performance from local comic Jason Groce, and when Barry took the stage nearly 45 minutes late, audience members likely would have been none the wiser if Theatre 99's Brandy Sullivan hadn't filled us in on the situation. Barry gave a crowd-pleasing performance, despite the fact that he really needed to pee. Now that's commitment to your art.
