Best Outpouring of Teacher Wrath

Educators Lobby to Stop School Deregulation

Staff Pick

S.C. Superintendent of Education Mick Zais wins a lot of political points with libertarians and folks who don't think education should be a public good, but he has never really ingratiated himself with — you know — teachers. The last straw came in the fall of 2013, when Zais asked the state Board of Education to consider eliminating student-to-teacher ratio caps, teacher workload limits, and requirements for the hiring of guidance counselors, among other regulations. Letter-writing campaigns commenced, board members' voicemails got clogged with angry messages, and online petitions started circulating. The Board of Education passed an initial reading of the proposal in early September with little discussion and almost no opposition, but by the time of the final vote in November, the public outcry had gotten so loud that the superintendent removed his proposal from the agenda. Zais has said he will not seek re-election this year.
