Sol Legare Road was a well-kept secret just a few years ago. At a wooded intersection on the way to Folly Beach, swing a right and you immediately find yourself in a world untouched by the last five decades. Pass still-operating seafood shacks, the ramshackle toll booth to Mosquito Beach, and pockets of old men sitting around in chairs set out in the yard. Then came Piggly Wiggly and a gas station at the intersection, fancy big houses along the road, a condominium complex, and now, a Wings beach store. But there's still an authenticity to Sol Legare. Make your way to the dead end at the boat landing, and you'll find yourself gazing across the expansive Stono River to Johns Island, joined only by a few boaters pulling their fishing vessels from the water. There's nary a more accessible, quiet place to watch another day pass into darkness.
