Nothing has quite the potential for revitalizing the heart of downtown than the City Market rehab. City Market Preservation Trust — headed by hotelier/restaurateur Hank Holliday — took over management of the Market back in 2008, and since then, they’ve been studying ways to reinvent the space. They envision a more robust marketplace for vendors, a nighttime venue for live events, and — eventually — a seamless connection to the waterfront. In January, they began restoring the sheds, repointing the brick work, repairing the roofs, installing new bathrooms, and upgrading the floors. The first round of renovations will be completed in May. Work will begin this fall on the enclosed shed before attention turns to the parking area on the other side of East Bay Street for additional market space.
