There's something mighty refreshing about seeing a monument to a man who tried to organize a slave rebellion standing tall in a Charleston park. Monuments to public figures in the Palmetto State tend to memorialize folks from the other part of our state's dark history. But after 18 years of struggle, the monument committee formed by Charleston County Councilman Henry Darby and Avery Research Center curator Curtis Franks successfully memorialized Vesey with a life-size statue in a quiet corner of Hampton Park.
