Glenn Roberts of Anson Mills had to go to an organic farmer in Indiana who had relatives in Costa Rica to track down a source for purple cape peas. An heirloom variety originally brought to Charleston through the banana trade, they were once grown by Captain Junior Magwood in his Cape Romain vegetable garden and served in the stews he cooked for the crew of his shrimp boat “Miss Alva,” on which Roberts worked many years ago. Celeste and George Albers are growing the beans now and selling them at their Marion Square market tent. They taste like a cross between a black bean and a Sea Island red pea, and we’re fortunate to have them back.
