Central Farmers Distribution Warehouse and Mobile Abbatoir

Last year, the Coastal Conservation League and Lowcountry Local First announced a plan to help strengthen the local food economy: establish a central distribution market and warehouse for farmers. Located on Morrison Drive, the warehouse will serve as a drop-off point for farmers within a hundred mile radius. From there, the products will be marketed and sold to grocery stores and restaurants. Eventually, they plan to open a retail market as well. Although it's still in initial stages, the distribution center should have a big impact, helping young farmers get a firm foothold and making local agriculture a viable economic industry. They're also planning to start a mobile abbatoir service, which will bring the slaughterhouse to the farm. Currently, it's costly for small livestock farmers to have their meat slaughtered and processed. A mobile abbatoir will let them process animals on-site for a lot less cost.
