Best Matchmakers

Erin Glaze and Max Miller

Staff Pick

Bringing artists and poets together for the annual Contemporary Charleston exhibit, co-curators Erin Glaze and Max Miller created an interactive show at City Gallery at Waterfront Park featuring 10 emerging and established local artists and poets. Julio Cotto was paired with local writer and Blue Bicycle Books owner Jonathan Sanchez and the result was a series of large-scale, fantastical images that were both beautiful and fierce. Kat Hastie worked with poet Katherine Williams to create a series of 38 small canvases that read like a book, while poet Bryan Penberthy's Lucktown influenced the carnival-themed murals of Scott Debus. Like all blind dates, some matches were more successful than others, but the City Gallery's exhibit offered the rare opportunity to see some of the most innovative contemporary artists under one roof.
