Best Lowcountry Proselytizer

Pat Conroy

Staff Pick

William Faulkner will always be the premier writer of Southern literature. Heck, he more or less created the genre. Speaking of creating a genre, the same goes for Pat Conroy, who crafted a very Lowcountry-centric brand of Southern prose. Unbelievably successful, Conroy scored hits with nearly every single thing that his purple-prose-crafting hands touched, from The Water is Wide to South of Broad. When Conroy revealed that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic just weeks ago, we were all shocked. When he died just a few days afterwards, we were devastated. So here’s to you, Pat, the prince of tides and the king of Lowcountry literature. —Chris Haire
