In addition to their usual ale menu of blondes, reds, wheats, browns, and stouts, the Southend Brewery & Smokehouse — Charleston’s only working brewpub — presents oddball seasonal beers every few months or so. Brewmaster Ahren Warf’s Imperial Brown Ale (6.8 percent a.b.v.) hit the taps in early fall. A dark-brown ale with loads of chocolate malt in the mix, it sprung to life with the addition of fresh cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and house-toasted oats. Perfect for the foods of Thanksgiving holidays, it was one of Southend’s most flavorful and well-crafted beers of the year.
