Best King Street Business that Went Belly Up

Granny's Goodies

Granny's Goodies
301 King St. Downtown.

It was an odd and abrupt end to a decades-long run when Steve and Lynne Crooks posted a "closed for funeral" sign on Granny's Goodies and skedaddled. The real story as to why they went under was hard to find out, but the closing kicked a huge hole in the heart of King Street. Granny's was once a vibrant storefront, rallying shoppers to spice up their wardrobes with vintage duds, crazy wigs, and funky accessories. And there was no place better to score a unique Halloween costume. As rents increased, they defrayed costs by sharing their space with another local institution — Cumberland's. When Granny's left, we all knew Cumberland's wouldn't be far behind. The no-frills music club closed for good on New Year's Day. Now, word has it that an Apple store will soon take over the space at 301 King St. Talk about your bittersweet ending.
