"Forgotten South Carolina"

Staff Pick

By Post and Courier reporter Doug Pardue’s reckoning, there are really two South Carolinas. One is Modern South Carolina, the 20 counties centered around urban areas that measure up to national averages for quality of life. The other is Forgotten South Carolina, the 26 counties where a catastrophic mix of poor health, high poverty and unemployment, perennially dismal school districts, and other factors combine to create a misery that seems to belong to a bygone era. Much as it pains us to say it (since he is the competition), Pardue is one hell of an investigative reporter, and we’re glad to see him rip the cover off of centuries of racial inequality and economic injustice.
