Barack Obama’s Eulogy of Clementa Pinckney

Staff Pick

Like many of you, we here at the City Paper watched the funeral of Clementa Pinckney from start to finish. Yes, some of us turned it down or looked away at certain points, but we watched it as much as we could. And like many of you, we made sure we were watching the live feed when President Barack Obama stepped up to the mic. While Obama delivered what may go down in American history as the single greatest speech about race in our great nation, it was that moment when the POTUS himself began singing “Amazing Grace” that moved us more than any other. And then, out of the blue, the organist, Charles Miller Jr., began to play, punctuating Obama’s words. All of a sudden, the commander in chief was transformed into the pastor in chief. —Chris Haire
