Best Impromptu Campaign Speech

Sen. Bernie Sanders

Staff Pick

While the stage was being set for the Democratic presidential debate in downtown Charleston, protesters calling for higher wages marched down Calhoun Street outside of the Gaillard Center. Recognizing an opportunity to reach out to the group of disenfranchised minimum-wage workers, Sen. Bernie Sanders took to the streets to address the crowd. Telling marchers to keep up the good work, the presidential candidate said that if elected, he would fight for higher wages for those earning low incomes. Standing among the protesters just moments before he was set to take the debate stage, it was an impressive move from the senator, even if he walked away from the South Carolina primary with only 26 percent of the vote. —Dustin Waters
