Riley’s pitch to take over I-526

Staff Pick

These days, you can’t mention Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr.’s name without someone bringing up his ongoing crusade to complete the Mark Clark Expressway. The final stretch of concrete from West Ashley to James Island has become a political football in recent years — even more controversial than “pee-can” vs. “puh-cahn.” But we can’t say we saw Mayor Joe’s attempt to take over the project from County Council coming. As it seemed like the sands in the I-526 hourglass were running out fast, Riley’s pitch to the council to take over the project was vintage Joe. Many hailed County Council’s vote to hold on to the project as a sign that I-526 was inching toward becoming a reality, but having watched this fight for decades now, we know it’s not done quite yet.
