Girls of that precarious tween age need better role models than Ke$ha and Katy Perry, and while Girls Rock! camps have been inspiring the next Sleater-Kinneys and Bratmobiles in metropolises like Seattle and Austin, it wasn't until 2011 that a group of Charleston women brought the week-long summer session to the Lowcountry. The ultimate goal of the camp was to encourage creative expression and boost self-confidence, with girls learning instruments, forming bands, making zines, and performing a show at the Music Farm. Stay tuned for future Girls Rock! benefits and next summer's camp, or visit girlsrockcharleston.org and see what you can do to help.
