Just a 25-minute drive up Highway 17 from Mt. Pleasant, this unassuming little diner in a yellow cinder block building offers some of the best fresh seafood, veggies, soups, and puddings in the east end of the county. Family-owned and operated for six years, the place is quaint and welcoming. While main chef Steve Tockmakis' oysters, flounder, and crab soup are the villagers' favorite, McClellanville Diner's best dish may be the fried shrimp basket. Served with fries or a substitute side dish like the terrific sautéed yellow squash or red rice, you get a lot of bang for your buck (a huge serving for $9.95). The fresh white shrimp are caught locally, fried with a spicy batter, and served crispy and hot. No fancy distractions necessary — this is real-deal local fried seafood at its finest.
