Full disclosure: We weren’t super stoked when we heard there was a new bakery opening on St. Philip, mostly because it was replacing our beloved Hope and Union coffee shop. And with Sugar and Wild Flour around the corner, we didn’t know what to expect from Brown’s Court. But we were wrong. So wrong. We can’t believe how wrong we were. Because ever since Brown’s opened, we’ve been stopping there every week for baguettes, pretzel rolls, pastries, and a little thing called a Buddha Baby that stuffs kimchi, bacon jam, and pimento cheese into a Hawaiian roll and holy crap it’s awesome (and also available at the Green Door). The selection here changes every day, but the coffee menu is consistent and as good as Hope and Union (especially since Brown’s makes their own flavored syrups). They also make bread for local restaurants like the Ordinary, where the plain Hawaiian rolls are also winning raves. Newbies should check out happy hour, when all bread is offered at a discount, and make sure to scope out the BOGO rack of day-old goods. Now that Brown’s Court is here, we don’t know how we lived life without it.
