Best Excuse for a Second Line

Mayor Tecklenburg’s Inauguration

Staff Pick

John Tecklenburg promised that if elected, there would be more live music in Charleston, and the new mayor made good on the promise from the very start of his term in office. Kicking off the inauguration of the city’s first new mayor in 40 years, a second line brass band paraded down Broad Street to officially welcome Tecklenburg to City Hall. A student of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied piano and jazz, and one-time jazz coordinator for Piccolo Spoleto, Tecklenburg kept the arts at the forefront of his mayoral campaign and that love of music shows no signs of changing now that he’s been elected. —Dustin Waters
