Best End of an Era

Hot Wheels Closing

Staff Pick

Roller-skating rinks have been dying a slow, agonizing death for the past, oh, 20 years or so. But thanks to events like the occasional roller-disco party and groups like the Lowcountry High Rollers, as well as still-eager groups of youngsters, Hot Wheels on James Island kept its skates rollin’ for more than two decades. Sadly, that all ended on Dec. 31 of last year, when manager Terri Halter had to announce that the rink would be closing its doors for good. As of Dec. 10, when the CP’s Paul Bowers spoke with Halter, she was hoping to find a new location to re-open Hot Wheels. We don’t know if that’s still in the cards, but for the sake of nostalgia and the High Rollers, who lost their longtime home (they’re now skating at the Indoor Sports of the Lowcountry facility), we certainly hope it is.
