Theatre 99

Staff Pick

Walking up the steep steps to Theatre 99 raises your endorphins, because the expectations are high. You know that for the next hour or so you are going to be drinking a glass of wine or beer, free from responsibilities and laughing your head off. What's not to love? Nathan Durfee figured out a way to make the experience even better. During those few moments that you stand around and wait for the show, there is now the visual stimulation of great art by emerging artists like Marius Valdes covering the walls of the lobby. Valdes' colorful cartoon characters are well known around town, and his show at "Gallery 99" was smart, witty, and laugh-out-loud funny. Rotating exhibits keep the view fresh for repeat theatergoers. Durfee's out-of-the-box thinking about viewing art has transformed the theater's hallway into a legitimate exhibit space for artists whose work might not fit in the typical downtown gallery.
