Best Comeback

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra

Staff Pick

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra was really put through the ringer last year. In April, the Board of Directors cut the symphony's season short due to a lack of funds. Musician representatives filed a lawsuit against the CSO with the National Labor Relations Board, but then offered to withdraw charges that the temporary shut-down of the organization was illegal in exchange for the immediate resignation of board president Ted Legasey and board bargaining committee chair Marty Klaper, as well as the appointment of 10 new board members. Local arts leaders held public forums in June to help figure out the best steps for the organization. The lowest point, though, was the death of music director David Stahl in October. But things have been looking up since then. The CSO brought on a new executive director and new board members and a huge crowd showed up for their belated season opener in January. The CSO is back and well on the road to recovery — let's just hope they can keep it that way.
