The lobby bar at the posh Charleston Place Hotel may seem like an unlikely place to find serious craft cocktails, which makes the Thoroughbred Club’s recent cocktail list makeover all the more impressive. They 86ed most of the sugary fusion martinis and replaced them with a drier, purer selection that includes barrel-aged Old Fashioneds, a Harvard Cooler with Calvados apple brandy and honey, and the Islay Fog, a beguiling blend of sweet amaretto, bitter Fernet Branca, and two scotches, Chivas Regal and Lagavulin. There’s no need to order a chocolate martini ever again.
