Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl’s bestselling novel about magic and mystery uses a small Lowcountry town and an old plantation house as its spooky settings. Published at the end of last year, it’s already being heralded as a classic of the young adult genre. Although Garcia and Stohl are based on the West Coast, their book drips with Southern charm and Civil War references as their heroine Lena and her chum Ethan Wate uncover secret sorcery in the most unexpected places. According to Teen Vogue, Beautiful Creatures has been generating “major Twilight-level buzz.” It’s been optioned by Warner Brothers with a script and direction by Richard LaGravanese (P.S. I Love You). The authors say they’re planning four more books in the series, with an overarching theme of “finding your place in the world.” For them, that place is right here on the banks of the Santee.
