Former Charleston Southern University associate professor Paul Roof is just an ordinary man with a magnificent beard and a big ol’ heart. As founder of the Holy City Beard & Moustache Society, he hosts charity facial-hair competitions to raise money for ovarian cancer patients and their families. Outside of the competitive bearding world, his face has also been used for a number of promotional purposes, including on the side of Holy City Brewing’s Chucktown Follicle Brown beer cans. When CSU declined to renew his contract last May, Roof said he had been canned for “endorsing the use of alcohol,” despite the fact that the school does not have a specific rule barring staff members from imbibing. After some consternation among his friends and supporters, Roof decided not to pursue his old job and instead landed on his feet across town at the College of Charleston, where he now teaches sociology and pop culture. Cheers to you, Prof. Roof.
