Best Barely-Attended Outdoor Concert

ShineFest 2009 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Stadium

Staff Pick

Despite a colorful lineup of touring and local bands — and a variety of kid-friendly activities — the all-day, all-ages ShineFest concert drew a fairy small crowd. The mission was to raise money for the Charleston County School District and the Trip Page Education Initiative. Longtime jam band Blues Traveler, reggae experts The Original Wailers, and popular local roots-rock group The Blue Dogs battled the drizzle and played for small audiences on the field. Luckily, the early birds who caught prog/jam drummer Jeff Sipe’s ensemble The Sipe-Coffin Group — featuring saxophonist/composer Jeff Coffin, guitarist Mike Seal, bassist Felix Pastorius (son of late jazz/fusion bassist Jaco Patorius), and flautist/keyboardist Kofi Burbridge — caught the most complex and impressive set of the day.
