We'll admit we were a little iffy on the concept at first when we heard that Pulitzer-nominated novelist Charles McNair was going to do a book reading at The Royal American, a sometimes-noisy bar on Morrison Drive. But when we got there and saw McNair up on the tiny stage, we were amazed how quickly the bar quieted down. Everyone, including the bartenders, paid rapt attention as he read from his latest book, Pickett's Charge, and the crowd stuck around to chat and get their books signed afterward. Color us surprised. Book more readings, please.
