Eames Demetrios: Kcymaerxthaere

Staff Pick

What goes on inside an artist's head is often a mystery to the rest of the world. But every now and then, an exhibit gives viewers a peek inside these strange realms, and those brave enough to take a look will end up with a less concrete way of seeing. This was the case with the Halsey's dual exhibits of Kcymaerxthaere and Winter Stories. "Geographer-at-large" Eames Demetrios brought the characters, language, and plot lines from his strange fantasy world to the Lowcountry for Spoleto. A small crowd of viewers gathered at the Old City Jail to sing along to the Kcymaerxthaere national anthem. They began tentatively, laughing uncomfortably, and eventually belted out the strange lyrics in unison. Maps on the walls of the Halsey invited viewers to participate in this interactive 4-D exhibit. Competing for attention across the hall were Ventura's photographs of a make-believe circus. Fun and fantastical, these exhibits transformed the drab and ordinary into something wonderful, encouraging viewers to join in the game.
