Hot Wheels Skating Center

Staff Pick

Roller skating as a pastime seems to be hanging on by a thread. Though the recent resurgence of roller derby has certainly helped keep skating alive, there are precious few spots left that are still dedicated to this dying, eight-wheeled art form. That's why we've got to salute Hot Wheels, which is keeping the skating torch lit out on James Island. Their old-school rink hasn't been changed in decades — and it smells like it. They welcome youngsters, tweeny-boppers, and grown-ups pretending it's a 1970s disco night, plus, of course, the Lowcountry Highrollers, who now hold their intraleague bouts at Hot Wheels. If you haven't skated in a while, you should give it a try — just make sure you bring knee pads, because you will definitely eat it at least three times. You're not in middle school anymore, after all.
