The CJO hearts the CBO — the Count Basie Orchestra, to be precise. That’s why they’re putting on a show to pay homage to William “Count” Basie, one of the most famous American bandleaders and swing musicians of all time. There’s a local connection, too. Throughout its more than 80 years of performing, the Count Basie Orchestra has included several South Carolina artists like the late guitarist Freddie Green, who hailed from downtown Charleston. So what makes the show, well, atomic? For one thing, the program features tunes from the Count Basie Orchestra’s 1958 album The Complete Atomic Mr. Basie. For another, the swing music that Maestro Charlton Singleton and the CJO will be playing has a lively, jumping beat, and the musicians are sure to throw in lots of freestyle. Anyone who remembers the CJO’s Countin’ on Basie performance during their inaugural season five years ago knows that this will be a show that gets your feet tapping.
